1. Cardiovascular

While not as effective as running or swimming, the average surfer burns 215-290 calories per hour, but competitive surfers can burn as much as 350-500 calories per hour. 

2. Back and Shoulder Strength

Paddling out to sea not only benefits the heart. It also builds muscles in the back and shoulders. Surfers should paddle evenly to move forward in a straight line and distribute the exercise evenly between both shoulders. Surfers only gain muscle when paddling on the surfboard  — not while surfing. 

3. Core and Leg Strength

Surfers improve their core strength when they transition from paddling to standing on the surfboard. The surfer will need to tighten their core muscles in order to stay standing while navigating the waters. The surfer will also need strong legs to keep them from buckling at the power of the waves.

4. Balance

Surfers don't have a way to anchor themselves to the surfboard. They need to use their balance to stay afloat, especially when the waves get rough. It can take some time for surfers to find their balance at first. Surfers will need to distribute their weight evenly on the surfboard and adjust weight distribution as necessary. Many surfers opt for surf lessons to get tips from a professional, as it can be difficult at first. Surfers can utilize their balance outside of surfing by doing yoga or dancing on the beach. 

5. Stress Relief 

There's a reason that the surfer vibe feels so laid back and carefree. Surfing can actually reduce stress. Something about the smell of salt water and the ocean breeze allows surfers to leave their problems at the office or at home and just enjoy being one with the ocean for a while. Excessive stress can lead to heart problems later in life, so it's good to have a hobby like surfing to prevent that from happening.
