Stalk, Stand Or Blind: How Do You Want To Hunt?
One of the most intriguing aspects of hunting at a world-class-caliber safari ranch is the flexibility you are afforded. For example, you can often pursue any of several different game species, and you can use the weapon of your choice.
Hunters visiting such ranches can also choose to hunt in any of several different manners. Do you want to stalk your prey on foot, hunt from an elevated stand, or ambush passing quarry from a camouflaged ground blind? Each method offers different pros and cons, and you should carefully consider the question before planning your trip.
Stalking
Stalking is often the choice of hunters seeking a traditional experience, not terribly different from that experienced by pioneers of the American West.
Stalking lends itself better to some prey species than it does to others, but in general, it is a challenging method by which to hunt. Most hunters interested in a stalking hunt will benefit from the services of a skilled and qualified guide, who has mastered the skills of tracking and stealth.
If you intend to pursue your prey on foot, be sure to bring the best footwear possible and select your hunting clothes with an eye toward ease of movement. You will also need a comfortable, high-quality pack to carry food, water and other necessities.
Elevated Stands
Elevated stands are perhaps the most effective method for whitetail deer hunting and for hunting other wary animals like boar. The elevated positioning not only allows you to remain above the natural sight line of these animals, but it keeps your scent up off the ground. Elevated stands offer particular benefit to bow hunters, who must limit their shots to relatively short distances.
Nevertheless, there are downsides to hunting from an elevated stand. Unlike stalking, hunting from a stand requires abundant patience and the ability to remain motionless for extended periods of time. To remain comfortable while hunting from a stand, you must have very warm clothing; otherwise, the combination of high winds and inactivity will make the experience miserable.
Ground Blind
Hunting from a ground blind is somewhat similar to hunting from an elevated stand, except that it usually allows for more posh accommodations. Many ground blinds feature comfortable chairs and some contain small heaters to help keep you toasty. As blind hunting does not require the participants to walk long distances or climb onto elevated platforms, it is well suited for young hunters or those with physical handicaps.
Hunting from a ground blind is a very popular method for hunting wild turkey, but it is also effective for hunting elk, moose and black bear.
